In February 2009, the French company Lordeurop presented its technical and economic substantiation, operational strategy and business plan for the future Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art. The company’s Vice-president, Mr Paul Alezraa, has kindly answered to our questions about issues regarding the museum’s project – public/private partnership, industrial heritage, involvement of the city and the distribution of functions.

From the 6th till 9th of October, Brussels hosted "OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities", in which Rīga was represented by Valters Māziņš, chairman of the board of SIA "Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums", the developers of Andrejsala.

It's on the left bank of the Daugava in the rural town of Jēkabpils, where local community effort led by one person has resulted in the restoring of a riverside recreation ground. The approach is interesting enough to deserve a mention in our website's experience section. Photos included!

From June 6 till 8, the Andrejsala property development company SIA Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums organised an architectural conference for discussing and modelling the possible future of one of the area's landmarks, the old grain elevator. Teams of experts worked on finding the optimum layout for the eventually transformable building so that, in line with its new functional concept, it would integrate ideally with both the existing and the future surroundings.

Everywhere in Europe, in nearly all cities, there is a particular place known as the local culture hub or arts centre – it may be a district, a notable architectural structure or a cluster of buildings. In the last three years, the flagship role in Rīga has been taken on by Andrejsala, while in Liepāja a similar status belongs to its Karosta. In this article, we have collected some information about similar arts centres in Poland.

On November 22, 2007, in Rīga, a conference titled 'Sustainable Development & Green Construction' presented the first edition of the Latvian guidelines for sustainable construction and building maintenance. The document comprises criteria for sustainable buildings that are based in an integral approach to ecological, social and economic aspects, resulting in a balanced methodology of development.

A delegation of SIA Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums participated in the leading waterfront real estate development, land use planning, construction and management conference and exhibition WaterfrontExpo, which took place in Lisbon from the 2nd to 4th of October. In 2007, the event chose to mainly focus on the sustainability aspects of land development in areas adjacent to rivers and other bodies of water.

Andrejsala of Rīga and Karosta of Liepāja are similar with regard to the ways that these territories can be reused, revitalised and even experience a form of renaissance: some of the territory and facilities are leased to the community of arts and culture, which helps to engender a particular, even a unique type of urban development. Realising these similarities, we decided to introduce our readers to Karosta.

As one can imagine, there are quite a lot of places named after (Saint) Andrew all around the world. Counting them all – and reading through a supposedly endless list – would probably require too much time and effort, so we went for the minimum of at least giving you the opportunity to learn about five more islands bearing the name of Andrew.
The islands are located in almost all continents of the globe – North America, South America, Asia and Africa have one apiece, leaving Europe with at least two more.
