A new plan for the central area of Andrejsala has made provisions for offering additional space of more than 8,000 square metres (9568 square yards) in a building in Andrejostas iela 4a, which already houses 'Imagine', the largest photographic studio in the Baltics, the storage facility of the Museum of Naïve Art and several offices.
At the time of this publication, the arts associations resident in Andrejsala are considering the best ways of using the building as a suitable environment for materialising their projects and spreading their presence from the already popular and active hub in the South End of the territory. The new rooms, if the artists become their tenants, would significantly diversify and enhance the ongoing local arts and culture programme as well as ensure greater comfort for visitors and further revitalise the environs by providing a contiguous and rich palette of activities and functions. Moreover, the building may also be used not just by the existing Andrejsala's associations but also by other interested parties, e.g., organisers of various events and businesses looking for office space.
The location in Andrejostas iela 4a could become yet another incubator of arts and culture activism that would breathe new life into the surroundings of the future Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art, while continuing in this mode of operation until the construction of the museum's building expected to integrate the now-defunct local power station. The ground floor and first floor of the structure can be adapted for sizeable public events, such as exhibitions, seminars and presentations, while the second floor would be appropriate for offices and conference space. Some parts of the building have already been opened for proposals of relevant projects.
For the last few years, SIA Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums, the Andrejsala property developer, has been providing useful support to arts activity. The company's strategy envisages a continuation of endorsing the arts and culture, put into practice by cooperating with various groups, associations and foundations working in the respective fields.
The first time Andrejsala saw a revival of arts and culture was in 2006 when the first Latvian Museum Night and the 'Sense in Place. Site-ations' project both marked the dynamic start of local activity by several groupings of creatives. More than 300 diverse happenings have taken place in just a couple of years, bringing to Andrejsala tens of thousands of visitors. At the moment more than twenty arts and activism associations are resident in Andrejsala.
