Here’s some news to the ‘islanders’ and the visitors of Andrejsala who have grown used to popping out for lunch to ‘Bufete’, the small and nice canteen opened two years ago in the basement of the Floating Workshop (Peldošā darbnīca in Latvian) moored at the south part of the area: in the middle of October it was relocated to the upper floor of the Anchor Building in 4a, Andrejostas Street (see map, item #5). The opening hours of the canteen will remain unaffected by the change: from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every working day. One thing should be noted though: there is no gurantee that hot dishes are available after two o’clock.
Bufete's menu alters daily, often by improvisation and taking inspiration from what's available fresh on that day at the Rīga's Central Market combined with the facility's own stocks kept here in a fridge. Buying the ingredients at the market instead of a hypermarket makes a huge difference in terms of the palatability of the cuisine! The local chef, Liene, previously learnt and practiced her vocation in New York, where she had the position of a restaurant chef's aide. The result of such a fortunate combination is that the patrons of Bufete can partake in Liene's interesting cooking, including, but not limited to, chicken with vegetables in an Indian style, lasagne, burritos, etc. Also the prices seem commensurate.
Getting to the canteen’s new location cannot be any easier since the Anchor Building, right in the middle of Andrejsala, has become widely populated by numerous creative businesses over the past year and hosted quite a few public events. Visitors coming to lunch are recommended to use the elevator or stairs in the annex to the building’s north façade; in case the entrance door is locked, all you have to do is press the buttons ‘3’ and ‘Ring’ on the code keypad.
Daily information updates direct from the canteen are just a couple of clicks away: you may sign up to the restaurant's mailing list at bufete@peldosadarbnica.lv and get an e-mail hint (in Latvian) about the menu of the day.
The Anchor Building can be easily accessed by car, bike, on foot or other means of transport, for which there is a car park near the building's entrance. To the convenience of individuals with special needs, a disabled wheelchair access ramp leads to the entrance to the building from a car park only a few metres away.
