Andrejsala's real property development company Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums offers catering companies the opportunity to set up outdoor cafés on Market Square with a total area of 1,800 square metres (>1,960 square yards) in the south end of the territory. Market Square is located on the bank of Andrejosta Bay within a three-minute walk from the nearest tram stop, and it offers breathtaking views of the River Daugava, the city’s passenger terminal, a yacht moorage, the Old Town’s magnificent spires and the island of Ķīpsala across the river.
The area available for rent is encircled by several visitor favourites such as the Latvian Museum of Naïve Art (operates from mid-May to late September), the A. Rezidences building which provides working space and accommodation to visiting international artists, the former garages (now the home to the Komutators cultural hub and the Riders of the Apocalypse, freakbike builders), the First Дača night club, and the Hull Shop and Machine Shop buildings which house the Riga Spirits & Wine Outlet, the Peahen art studio and the city’s biggest antique store to name a few. North of Market Square, there is a small green area of deciduous trees that provide good shade in the summer heat (yes, it can get hot here too!). It has to be mentioned that Anchor Building, a rapidly developing creative business hub with hundreds of people working there, is only a short walk away from Market Square.
The surface on Market Square is made of large concrete plates bearing testimony of Andrejsala’s industrial past – its former affiliation to the city’s port. There exist several connection points to the electricity network on Market Square that is well floodlit as darkness sets in. Historically, the south bank of Andrejsala was built to provide moorage to boats, an advantage that quite a few cutters have taken in the last few years when visiting Rīga (note that confirmation from the Freeport of Rīga Authority has to be obtained). There is also a car park nearby, at the Anchor opposite the Hull Shop at 4 Andrejostas Street.
Over the past few years, outdoor cafés have been functioning in Andrejsala during several public events such as the Museum Night, the Water Festival etc. However, this is the first time that catering companies are offered to set up outdoor cafés there for the entire summer season.
