Outline of the Market Square (JPG)
The location of the Market Square is within Andrejsala's South End, a residence and favourite haunt of various artists, art activists and visitors. Park your car near the sculptural Anchor located opposite the Hull Shop, and you're almost there.
The square is suited to a wide variety of activities including outdoor arts workshops, exhibitions and presentations as well as festivals of music, theatre, cinema and themed marketing and image-making parties. Even in the cold season, interesting uses can be thought up and implemented, such as a public skating-rink, a compact cross-country skiing place and the organising of other wintry pastimes.
To give an example, we'll list some of the more notable Market Square events of the recent couple of years. Thus, the Museum Nights of 2006, 2007 and 2008 proved very popular with the public, as were two events in 2006: the house music night of the Rīga annual festival and the discovery of the artwork titled Pink House by Aigars Bikše and Kristaps Gulbis, which was also supported by Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums. A travelling show called Cargo Sofia began here in 2006; a televised game Grāls was filmed in 2007; a spectacular show of fire sculptures was attended by hundreds of visitors during the celebration of Andrejsala's name day on November 30, 2007. The square also offered refreshments at two outdoor cafés specially arranged for the all-day Andrejsala Water Festival in the first weekend of June 2007. For several years, the Market Square has also hosted the popular pre-solstice modern-day folk project Jaunie Jāņi, organised by local rock band Dzelzs Vilks.
We are open to new ideas concerning future parties and short-term events on the Market Square, therefore feel free to e-mail us with your proposals at rent@andrejsala.lv or call us at +371 67358980.
