September 21 was the closing day of the international competition titled 'Creation of outdoor functional design objects for Andrejsala', in which Jaunrīgas attīstības uzņēmums invited designers to come up with unique projects that would increase the added value of Andrejsala's urban environment, thus also contributing to the overall advancement of applied design in Latvia.

The competition received a total of 35 submissions, of which the three best projects of outdoor benches and litterbins were taken to the second round of the challenge.

On September 27, a panel of experts evaluated whether the ideology proposed in the competition's manifesto has been adequately implemented in the designs of benches by Ilze Vanaga & Jānis Neiders, Ilze Začeste and Damien Spies. It was examined how well the contestants' creations conform to the established set of guidelines regulating the functional, usability and cost-related aspects of the prospective outdoor objects. Also those simply visiting Andrejsala are now able to try sitting on the new benches (map) and form their own opinion regarding their suitability for the local surroundings and general attractiveness.

Shortly after, on October 5, the winning design will be announced at the launch of an exhibition of all the submissions taking place during the Design Days in Andrejsala.
